The Annexe
The Annexe is the redevelopment of an underused site for a social housing provider, creating up to thirty one-bedroom apartments with community spaces, workshops and ancillary rooms on the ground floor.
We tested several options with the client before settling on a design that sits within the site’s wider context. A variety of brick tones, bonding patterns and detailing gives it a calm, traditional character, while chamfered corners and round windows reflect details found in the surrounding historic buildings.
A successful relationship is working openly and collaboratively to achieve something that goes beyond just us, driven by a collective ambition to deliver more than just a building.
Aubourn Architecture
The massing was refined by splitting the building into three blocks and introducing a stepped-back mansard roof to the upper floor. Every apartment exceeds space standards, with a focus on layout and natural light.
At ground level, large windows and a welcoming entrance on the main corner open the community space to passers-by, creating an active frontage. A south-facing courtyard gives residents and visitors a green space to relax and meet, while a fabric-first approach underpins the energy strategy.
